RAE'S BARBERSHOP

Best Interior Renovation - Small Scale

This award is given to the building or business owner who has completed outstanding interior space transformation; here is their story.

From eyes to an eye-sore and now, easy on the eyes!

Back in the early 1950s, Dr. Harvey L. Hougen’s office was where you went for optometric services; just ask Gordy, who, as an active boy, visited him frequently!  However, when retirement came for the good Doctor, so went the practice and the office.

For years, this area sat, growing older and rounder as it became a storage room filled with a little of this and a lot of that.

Along came the Walker family, who purchased the beloved Standard Mercantile, then realized the potential for this little area.  Taking out the old ceiling tiles and walls and removing the wood to open the transom windows back up, this area began a transformation, moving back into the old, but with new life.

Having a neighbor who was growing up to quickly for her current space, an idea formed – keep the quaint little barbershop theme, but with the room to make those growing pains fit.

With the updated space, Rae’s is able to offer ADA accommodations, and with another Barber, Elicia, on site, you can be sure whether you needed a quick trim or a confidence boost before a big day, their chairs are the place to be. On top of great hair care, Rae’s offers a variety of products to keep your style looking brand new every day.  From grooming goods to fluoride-free whitening toothpaste, deodorant to soap, Rae’s has a full line to keep you feeling and smelling fresh!

The Rainmakers

Community Champions (Volunteer of the Year)

The Community Champion (previously referred to as the Volunteer of the Year) Award is designed to recognize the individual who contributed the most to the Main Street program throughout the past year; we have a whole gang - just look.

While we love Mother Nature, sometimes you just have to yell, “Let it rain up in here!”  Lucky for us here in Tomahawk, when that call goes out, we have a dedicated crew who comes running…well, driving, the water cart!

Our Rainmakers team is made up of Bruce, Cindy, Dick, Kathy, and Phil, a group of volunteers who are dedicated to keeping our Foster Flower program looking its best.  Up and at it every morning by 6:00 a.m., our crew waters the flower beds and baskets, weeds, and picks up garbage to keep our downtown bright, beautiful, and well hydrated.

Rose, Deb, and Jane are also amazing volunteers, and while they might not drive the cart, they are valuable team members, weeding, mulching, and picking up any miscellaneous items missed or left behind.

Our downtown is a vibrant showcase, and without our Rainmakers dedication, we could not keep our downtown in full bloom.

We also have to thank the city crew who maintains the water cart for us and Cerny’s for their continued support, planting our flowers for us; they say it takes a village, and it is so true!

Jennifer Turkiewicz and

Tomahawk Main Street, two more mentions!

During the awards ceremony, two very special moments were shared!

Tomahawk has once again been recognized as a Nationally Accredited Community for 2025.  This top tier recognition honors our proven track record of planning, implementing, and measuring results that align with the Main Street approach; accredited programs must meet the baseline requirements and demonstrate success in each of the six Accreditation Standards.

Our Executive Director, Jennifer Turkiewicz, was also honored for her five years of dedicated service.  This award recognizes the hard work, vision, and dedication of those who contribute to the economic development of Wisconsin, celebrating the success of projects and initiatives executed by the Main Street program.
